New Bedside Table Lamps?

Matt and I are slowly working on our master bedroom, which has thus far been the most neglected area of our little home. We have added a few new pillows, and are now thinking about new lamps. The current ones were purchased in early 2007 from Bed Bath & Beyond on sale. They came in a two-pack. They were cheap. They are crystal and classic but are showing a lot of wear after moving to multiple apartments in NYC and then making the trek from there to Toronto.

Since our room is so tiny and features little more than our bed, two small nightstands, clothing storage cupboards, and a little bookshelf, the lamps are actually a pretty major element. But, we have almost no moolah for the things we want to update in there. Alas, the lamps listed here are ones I love but for the most part are not exactly realistic for us right now. But maybe one will be perfect for you?

I love the mercury glass and shape of this one, but worry it wouldn't work so well with the chandelier in the space. Isn't it pretty though?

Mercury glass with French text? Yes please! (Love it so much that, if the price were right - it is just a little too high for us-- I think I could make the mercury glass work after all...)
(Layla Grace, $173)

(To see more lamp ideas & inspiration and DIY options, click "read more" to continue the post).
The classic crystal on this urn lamp would work really well with the other existing elements of our space. I've always thought it was a stunning piece. However, despite being on sale for $70 off right now, these bad boys are $385 a pop. Gulp.

These lamps by Arcadian Lighting make quite a statement, though I'd need a whiter shade I think. Oh, and about $1000 to get a pair...
(Layla Grace, $488)

Now, adding colour seems like it might be the way to go. Here's some inspiration. Love the scale of this first one for our tiny tables.
(Layla Grace, $585)

And this sea glass is lovely.
(Layla Grace, $345)

Jonathan Adler never fails to add a lot of interest.

And Ralph Lauren's patterned lamps are beautiful in a more traditional way. But the price. Oh. My. God.
(Ralph Lauren, $1620 but on sale now for a mere $1134).

This colour, on an otherwise simple form, seems dramatic in all the right ways.
(Lumens, Currently on sale for $470)

Same with the red. Love the red. Not sure I can pull off red...
(Lumens, Currently 20% off, $480 [orig. $600])

And now, for the only two options I might actually consider buying. First, these lamps have long been a favourite of mine. And they are on sale. But what colour would I choose? (For real, what colour would I choose? I'd LOVE to hear your opinion!). I love all three options... and each for different reasons.
And the other actual option, these gorgeous milk glass lamps. I have such a thing for milk glass despite not owning a single piece of it. And I like the tiny footprint of this lamp, given how tiny our nightstands are. So I kind of lean toward these right now. But again, which colour? And which ones are better -- the milk glass or the above ceramic ones? Or something else completely... hmmm...
(Pottery Barn, $129)

And lastly, I am also thinking that finding lamps in need of some TLC and giving 'em a little makeover might just be our best bet... Here's some inspiration:

A coat of paint and new fabric (not this fabric for my room, but the idea of choosing another fabric to layer in is super appealing) make these lamps really special. Check out the details at Isabella and Max Rooms right here.

And Room To Think shares a step-by-step picture tutorial on how to paint brass lamps. I see those bad boys at second hand shops for just a few bucks a piece.
And another inspiring project, from His and Hers. See it right here
I'll keep you posted as the search for inexpensive better bedside lighting continues.
(And let me know what you think of those Pottery Barn choices, or any of the other lamp ideas!)

  9. The mercury glass is so pretty! But, I would vote for a lamp makeover of a 2nd hand lamp. A coat of paint and a new lampshade and you're good to go. Also, if you get tired of it, you can just repaint or change it out and not feel guilty about spending a lot of money.

  12. Thanks so much for sharing my lamp makeover, Jenny! I so agree about the outrageous prices of lamps. But hey, "a mere $1134"...I say you should get one for every room of the house at that bargain price ;)

Both of your "maybe" options are gorgeous--using them as a pop of color would be fun! :)

  13. I love the mercury glass lamp! It amazes me how expensive lamps are these days. I went searching for new lamps and couldn't find anything under the $200 mark that I liked...for a table lamp! I vote for a lamp makeover :)

  15. Oh I think lamps are so hard to shop for through a catalog or online. I've had the best luck actually seeing a lamp in the store to get the right shape, size and then using that as a guide to find exactly what I need online in that same scale. Since it is an item you will probably live with for a long time, I don't mind paying a little extra to get just what seems right.

  16. Lamps are so crazy high! I just don't get it? I would vote for a makeover. We get great options, really unique at our local thrift stores. Have you tried looking at pre owned? Good luck!

  17. I think the ceramic are pretty. However, I think a makeover is the more fun and frugal. I just bought some of the Krylon Looking-Glass Mirror paint to do a lamp makeover myself. I'll share when I get it done. Thanks for sharing at the party...loved looking at all the pretty lamps.

  21. HomeGoods has some great lamps at really good prices. You could find a vase you like and make it into a lamp easily with a kit. Take your time and wait until you find some you really love.

  25. To illuminate your hall, bedroom or study, it is also necessary to consider the wattage of the lamp. For reading, you usually need a table lamp with 150 watts. It is also a good idea to choose a lamp with a shade which hides the socket of the bulb, so that the lamp looks more attractive from a distance and also reduces possibilities of a constant glare.

  35. Hi admin
Its terribly amazing, that's the blog you admire I likable it.
I have put together this connected web site.
Decorating the bedroom isn't complete without a having a nice table lamp to go along with it. Two things to consider when choosing a suitable table lamp for your bedroom are design and quality of lighting.
